Project 2 is complete!

Some glitches in the camera/aftereffects animation elements, but i really think the style statement i was going for comes through.

As my last project for the York/Sheridan program in Design, I'm glad i had one last chance to play with AfterEffects and a Sharpie

here is a sample of the final plate for each video, replacing 'music' with 'film' and 'the industry'
with video i would add an effect to "rocks", a blur or a jitter.

the lines at the top represent a distillation of a sheet music staff, the film plate would be a film strip.

Project 2: Concept 1

NXNE "Rocks" - storyboards

NXNE is festival that combines a music industry conference with a film and a music festival. I want to create a series of videos that promotes both the uniqueness and coherence of the individual aspects of the event.

My concept here is to mimic the process of anticipating and participating in an event like a festival. There is the announcement, the anticipation, the buildup, the climax and the dénûment. I also am interested in a sort of "yellow brick road" feel, following a pathway that gets more and more chaotic until an 'explosion' and a fade to a plain white screen.

Each video starts with the date of the festival, which becomes a horizontal line. This line becomes a feature specific to that part of the festival (music/film/conference - staff/filmstrip/audio line). These features shift from 2-dimensional to a perspective, and the camera travels down the 'road' created by the line.

At this point I want to start adding new elements related to the event. Footage, sound effects, logos and photos, and build up the chaos factor to a climax, and then fade to a white screen with the tagline:

"NXNE. music rocks"
"NXNE. film rocks"
"NXNE. the industry rocks"

respectively.

That's about as much as I can elaborate on the idea. I need some refinement and some feedback!

I had a lot less time than I thought to polish this up. No time to re-shoot, but hopefully the place cards for the street names pace out the piece a little bit.

I still think it's way cool.

The music is "Piano Black" from Cowboy Bebop. I know that David Gelb mentioned the importance of our ability to produce our own music, but as a creative director i thought that this music just fit in way too perfectly. I think that finding appropriate existing music can be just as challenging/rewarding. (Music directors deserve some love!)

NXNE

Overview

I will be creating a series of four short promotional videos for NXNE (north by northeast) which is a combination of a film and music festival and a conference for industry professionals. I should like to create a short for each section of the festival, Film, Music, and Conference, and a short piece promoting the festival as a whole.

Audience

The musical line up for NXNE are spread over venues all over Toronto. The festival is intended to appeal to "anyone looking to learn more about the music business" (toronto.com) The festival is for music enthusiasts and industry professionals. The films playing at the film festival are music related and include "concert classic, indie docs, shorts and features" (toronto.com)

Key Message

NXNE is for music lovers.

Content Planning

The promotional films will be short, punchy, lively and with very little information. I hope to convey the mood of the festival in a very short period of time using abstract things like image, colour, shape and sound, and follow it up with the logo and the dates of the festival.

Technologies

I will be using Adobe Illustrator, AfterEffects and Final Cut to assemble this project. I want to combine hand drawn images with clean vectors to match the content on the website

I started at Finch+Sentinel -> Jane -> Steeles -> Keele -> Finch and finished at Sentinel Rd.

When I was training for my Marathon, I learned that this route is 10km.
